Falls Prevention

This is a brief screening tool that can be used by GPs or practice nurses during Health Assessment home visits

Comprehensive Assessment tool (rtf format for Medical Director)
This is a tool for GPs. The GP can complete most or all of this tool and forward it to an Allied Health Provider or Specialist using it as the basis of a referral for further investigation. This tool can also be used as the basis of a Care Plan if there needs to be involvement from other health professionals.

Updated MBS flipchart – available as website soft copy only

The Victorian Department of Health has produced an updated version of the MBS resource entitled 'Summary of new Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS) item numbers: general practice and allied health' about items related to chronic disease and mental health care for primary healthcare agencies.

This resource is also known as the MBS flipchart.  The updated flipchart includes new relevant items, changes to existing items and revised rebate amounts current as at December 2011. This useful resource presents summarised information on the applicability of relevant MBS item numbers to clients/patients and associated business rules in an easy-to–use format.

The flip chart is only available via the Victorian Department of Health website in soft copy; there is no plan to print a hard copy version. The frequent changes to the MBS make it difficult to maintain an up to date printed version.

Whooping Cough Resource Online

Australian healthcare professionals, public health workers and patients now have another weapon in the fight against whooping cough, with the launch of www.whoopingcough.com.au . The site has been developed to offer an easy to use and interactive tools such as an Australian map with information tailored by State, a 10 question quiz and Facebook sharing in order to help spread the message.In response to the pertussis outbreak, several Australian States have implemented adult pertussis vaccination programs to help cocoon babies who are too young to be adequately protected,  with each State having different eligible groups, providers and program dates.

PRESCRIPTION SHOPPING INFORMATION SERVICE

If a doctor suspects a patient of getting medicine in excess of medical need, they can call Medicare Australia 's Prescription Shopping Information Service.  First, the doctor will need to register - complete and sign the Registration Form located at the website below and fax it to (02) 6124 7820.  Medicare Australia will provide confirmation of registration by fax within 2 business days or by mail if a fax number is not provided.

Once registered, a doctor can call the Information Service 24 hours a day, seven days a week on 1800 631 181  and:

-find out if their patient has been identified under the Prescription Shopping Program
-receive information on the amount and type of PBS medicine recently supplied to that patient.

About Medicare Australia's Prescription Shopping Program

The Prescription Shopping Information Service is administered by the Prescription Shopping Program.

Medicare Australia is working to identify patients who are getting PBS medicines in excess of medical need.

Medicare Australia can contact a prescriber if their patient is identified under the Prescription Shopping Program.

Medicare Australia has the authority to disclose without consent, specific and limited PBS information to a doctor about their patients who may be getting PBS medicine in excess of medical need. Click the link below for further information.
