What is the Student Nurse Placement Program (SNPP)?

  • The SSNP is an innovative program funded by Health Workforce Australia (HWA).
  • HWA was established to address the challenges of providing a skilled, flexible and innovative health workforce.
  • Funding from HWA was passed to Monash University as an initiative to meet the future challenges of providing a health workforce with the appropriate clinical training placements.
  • Bayside General Practice Network, in partnership Monash Division of General Practice and Southcity GP Services are working together to provide clinical placements for student nurses across the three divisions after receiving funding from Monash University to develop this program

Who are the stakeholders?

  • Monash University, Faculty of Nursing & Midwifery.
  • Coordinator of SNPP.
  • GP practices across three divisions.
  • Practice nurses.
  • Practice managers.
  • Students.

What does the Program do?

  • The program asks general practice to assist with clinical placement opportunities for nursing students from three different streams of nursing study though Monash University – Bachelor of Nursing and Undergraduate Masters (these students have a previous degree and have articulated into nursing).
  • The program aims to facilitate and coordinate a positive learning experience for the student by liaison with participating practices by providing a clinical placement with a general practice under the supervision of a registered nurse to consolidate, complete and evaluate learning objectives associated with the identified stream.
  • A placement is considered to be 5 day or 40 hour study blocks.  Study blocks can be 5, 10 or 15 day in length depending on the learning objectives of the unit. A high degree of flexibility is warranted to reflect and acknowledge the busy and unique nature of a general practice learning environment.

What can the SNPP do for your practice?

  • The SNPP will provide support and liaison between the practice nurse and the university with the provision of the coordinator in a full time capacity.
  • The practice nurse will have access to fully funded preceptor training provided by the university. (ADD)
  • Provide an orientation manual to the participating practices, and all interested stakeholders, outlining educational details for learning activities, administrative and financial details.
  • Ensure all medico legal responsibilities are supported.
  • Regularly and whenever necessary arrange meetings to discuss and address any issues arising with the organization and arrangement related to the placement.

How your practice can assist the program?

  • Provide a placement opportunities for students with a registered practice nurse for the length of the placement.
  • Work with the coordinator to provide a flexible and rewarding experience for all.

What are benefits?

  • Improve recruitment and retention with increased workforce outcomes.
  • Improved patient outcomes as it establishes links with Monash University – providing greater integration between what is the university are teaching and what is in practice.  Students bring knowledge of new developments in nursing practice.  Practice nurses can develop the skills of supervision, learning and peer review.
  • Improved graduate outcomes – consistent clinical placement in a quality general practice setting, offers an improved clinical experience.
  • Provide a remuneration to the practice in the form of a sign on fee of $500 (+GST) and $100 (+ GST) for every five (5) day placement.
  • Demonstrates to the community the practices commitment to training the next generation workforce and has links with tertiary providers.
